Neighboring districts are (from the south clockwise) Phu Kradueng, Nong Hin, Wang Saphung and Erawan of Loei Province, and Si Bun Rueang of Nongbua Lamphu Province.
The minor district (King Amphoe) was established on January 1 1988, when the four tambon Pha Khao, Tha Chang Khlong, Non Po Daeng and Non Pa Sang were split off from Phu Kradueng.[1] It was upgraded to a full district on November 3 1993.[2]
The district is subdivided into 5 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 64 villages (muban). There are no municipal (thesaban) areas, and 5 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
